Mexico Earthquake Videos: Angel Of Independence, Buildings In Mexico City; Acapulco Airport Shake Amid 6.5 Temblor

A 6.5-magnitude earthquake rattled Mexico City and parts of the southwestern state of Guerrero on Friday morning, sending people rushing outside as buildings swayed for several seconds, according to Mexico’s National Seismological Service.
Clips of the tremor quickly spread across social media, showing structures shaking and residents reacting in fear. The National Seismological Service confirmed the quake in an update posted on X, noting that it was felt across a wide area.
Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum was holding her routine morning press briefing when the seismic alert suddenly sounded. She and members of the media promptly evacuated the presidential palace and returned shortly afterward once authorities gave the all-clear.
Sheinbaum later said the earthquake’s epicenter was located roughly 15 kilometers from San Marcos in Guerrero, about 230 kilometers from the capital. Initial assessments, she added, did not indicate significant damage.
“So far, preliminary reports show no serious damage in Mexico City or Guerrero,” Sheinbaum said.
The US Geological Survey said the earthquake struck at 13.58 GMT, or 7.58 am local time.
Why Is Mexico City Prone To Earthquake?
Seismologists explain that Mexico City is particularly susceptible to strong shaking because much of it sits on soft, waterlogged soil left behind by an ancient lake. As a result, seismic waves can feel more intense there compared to other regions. Many powerful earthquakes in Mexico also originate off the coast of Guerrero along the Pacific.
The country has a long history of devastating quakes. One of the deadliest occurred on September 19, 1985, when a massive 8.1-magnitude earthquake flattened large parts of Mexico City and claimed nearly 13,000 lives, according to official figures.
What Residents Said
After resuming her press conference, Sheinbaum said she had spoken with Guerrero Governor Evelyn Salgado, who also reported no major structural damage in the state.
Residents along the coast described dramatic moments as the quake hit. Jose Raymundo Diaz Taboada, a doctor and human rights advocate living in the hills near Acapulco, recalled hearing a loud sound just before the shaking started.
“In that moment the seismic alert went off on my cell phone,” he said. “Then the shaking began to feel strong, with a lot of noise,” he added.
Although he said the tremor felt weaker than some past earthquakes, Diaz Taboada said he still took precautions. “I prepared a backpack with essentials so I would be ready to leave as the aftershocks continued,” he added.
He also said he was unable to contact some friends in the Costa Chica area southeast of Acapulco due to disrupted phone and internet services.
Authorities are continuing inspections of buildings, airports, highways, and hospitals. So far, officials say there are no confirmed reports of widespread damage or serious injuries, but assessments are ongoing.
