On Monday night, a leading MIT nuclear‑science professor, 47‑year‑old Nuno Loureiro, was tragically found shot deceased in his Brookline, Massachusetts apartment when police responded to a call about a man shot at about 8:30 p.m.; he was taken to a regional hospital where he died the following morning.
The incident is being treated as an active homicide investigation, a stance the Norfolk District Attorney echoed by saying, “This is an active and ongoing homicide investigation,” the DA said.
“No further information is being released at this time.” Brookline Police Deputy Superintendent Paul Campbell, speaking to WBZ‑TV, noted that the victim had been shot multiple times but refused to provide further details.
The killing follows a mass shooting at nearby Brown University—located roughly 50 miles away—where two students were killed and the suspect remains at large.
Loureiro, originally from Portugal, held positions in MIT’s Nuclear Science & Engineering and Physics departments and served as director of the Plasma Science and Fusion Center, one of the university’s largest laboratories with more than 250 full‑time researchers.
MIT’s spokesperson, while expressing “Our deepest sympathies are with his family, students, colleagues, and all those who are grieving,” they told The Post. “Focused outreach and conversations are taking place within our community to offer care and support for those who knew Prof. Loureiro, and a message will be shared with our wider community.”
The spokesperson added that state police, the Norfolk District Attorney, Brookline police and MIT police are leading the investigation, and the school will refrain from further commentary out of respect for its ongoing integrity.
