Both former Guardians pitchers—Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz—showed up in the Brooklyn courtroom separately on Tuesday, yet they didn’t exchange a single word. The judge even had to instruct them to greet each other with a handshake.
Once in federal court, the two men faced accusations that they’d tipped off gamblers about the exact pitches they would throw during specific moments of a game, thus giving certain bettors a privileged edge.
Neither pitcher spoke to reporters or to the other before their attorneys demanded that they at least perform a formal, if cold, greeting.
Both Clase, who had been one of the league’s top relievers before the scandal, and Ortiz, who wore a black suit, maintain that they’re innocent and have pleaded not guilty. They remain out on bail while the trial proceeds.
Judge Kiyo Matsumoto scheduled a return appearance for January 15 and tentatively set May 4 for opening jury selection, with the trial itself slated to start on May 11.
