A group of Indian lawmakers led by BJP MP and Lok Sabha member PP Chaudhary met with the Indian‑American community in New York City on Friday. The gathering, held to foster ties with the diaspora, brought together 15 MPs from different parties, including Captain Brijesh Chowta, Nishikant Dubey, Ujjwal Deorao Nikam, S Phangnon Konyak, Dr Medha Vishram Kulkarni, Poonam Ben Maadam, Vamsi Krishna Gaddam, Vivek Tankha, Sribharat Mathukumilli, Rajeev Rai and N K Premachandran.
The delegation arrived in New York on Oct 7 to represent India at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). PP Chaudhary heads the first non‑official delegation, which will stay in New York from Oct 8 to 14. The group can attend UN sessions, engage with India’s Permanent Mission and share India’s democratic perspective on global issues—a move that signals the country’s growing diplomatic reach.
Samajwadi Party MP Rajeev Rai highlighted that the delegation includes members from several parties, ensuring a balanced view of India’s parliamentary diversity. Chaudhary opened the UNGA General Debate on Oct 8, delivering India’s national statement in the Third Committee. He sharply condemned Pakistan for what he called a legacy of oppression and propaganda, reiterating that Jammu and Kashmir remains an integral part of India.
Chaudhary criticized Pakistan’s repeated use of UN platforms to advance narrow political goals, accusing it of rigging elections, imprisoning leaders and suppressing protests. He pointed out that even Pakistan’s own army chief had described the country as a “dump truck,” underscoring the governance issues at stake.
Overall, the delegation’s presence in New York and participation in the UNGA underscores India’s commitment to parliamentary diplomacy and its desire to project a rights‑based, democratic image on the world stage. ()
