NASCAR legend Greg Biffle’s plane was in air only 7 minutes, almost made safe emergency landing before exploding, killing everyone on board
A private jet carrying NASCAR legend Greg Biffle, his wife Cristina, their two children, and three additional passengers crashed at Statesville Regional Airport in North Carolina just after take‑off on Thursday afternoon.
The airplane, a Cessna C550, was in the air for only about seven minutes before suffering an engine failure and bursting into flames near the runway. Investigators say the flight had cut close to a safe emergency landing before the aircraft exploded, killing everyone on board.
The jet had departed from the airport roughly 45 miles north of Charlotte. Data shows it performed an abrupt 180‑degree turn and tried to return to the runway, but it could not make it in time.
Air‑traffic‑control transcripts and flight‑track logs support this sudden reversal and the unusual movement that occurred after the seven‑minute flight duration.
Cristina Biffle’s mother told People that her daughter had sent a distressing text just moments before the crash, reading “We’re in trouble.” The message was sent to her mother before the fatal event unfolded.
Aviation analyst Max Trescott, speaking on the NTSB News Talk podcast, pointed out a “rather unusual” jump in the tracking data after the jet had been airborne for seven minutes. He also praised the pilot for a “remarkable job” executing the turn back toward the airport in drizzle and cloud‑shrouded conditions, though the aircraft ultimately landed short of the runway.
“We got incredibly close and somehow lost things just at the very end,” Trescott said.
Federal investigators were combing through the wreckage on Friday, trying to determine who was actually operating the plane and what exactly prompted the emergency attempt so soon after take‑off.
The deaths include Biffle, his wife Cristina, their children Ryder (5) and Emma (14), along with the crew member Dennis Dutton, his son Jack, and Biffle’s friend Craig Wadsworth.
