NBA star guard ‘Scary Terry’ Rozier ponies up $3M bail in sports betting case — as feds tease plea talks

Miami Heat guard Terry “Scary Terry’’ Rozier stepped into the public eye on Monday by pledging his Florida home to cover a $3 million bail after authorities began discussing “plea negotiations” in the latest NBA‑betting case. The 31‑year‑old, who was in the fourth year of a then‑$96 million contract when he was taken into custody in October, appeared in a gray suit at Brooklyn federal court and pleaded not guilty, while Judge LaShawn DeArcy Hall announced the case would be set aside until March 3 for further talks. Rozier, who was suspended after his arrest, is charged with warning childhood friend Deniro Laster to fake an injury and leave a game early on March 23, 2023, during a Charlotte Hornets outing. Laster then sold the inside information for $100,000 to a sports‑betting crew that included self‑styled “gamblers” Marves “Vezino’’ Fainley and Shane “Sugar’’ Hennen, according to court filings. Those bettors allegedly made hundreds of thousands of dollars by betting the “under” on Rozier’s statistics, knowing he would not meet them because he exited the game. If convicted on conspiracy charges of wire fraud and money laundering, Rozier could face up to 20 years in prison. After the hearing, his lawyer Jim Trusty vowed to file a motion to get the case dismissed. Both Fainley and Hennen also entered not‑guilty pleas. Rozier has not received any of his $26.6 million salary while he battles the NBA in an arbitration dispute, his counsel said. Meanwhile, prosecutors in the Eastern District of New York announced a second indictment targeting former NBA star Chauncey Billups and former player Damon Jones, accusing them of baiting victims into rigged poker games backed by four of the five New York mob families.
