A 50‑year‑old man in Chinatown was arrested after he stabbed a 69‑year‑old resident to death on a floor of a local apartment building.
Police say the incident happened on Saturday afternoon around 3:50 p.m. at 7 Eldridge Street, a block inside Manhattan’s Chinatown. The attacker, Feizhon Zheng, has been taken into custody and charged with murder.
Zheng was stopped by officers in nearby Monroe Street, a couple of blocks from the crime scene. He is now in police custody in the city’s Criminal Justice Center.
The victim’s name has not been released because authorities are still waiting for the family to be notified. Police are still investigating how the attacker came to know the man who was killed.
The incident has sparked a call for safer streets in the neighborhood and for better measures to prevent sudden, violent attacks in apartment buildings.
Police: “We’re looking for more information about how this happened and why the attacker was able to bring a knife into the apartment.”
