A tragic road‑rage incident on the interstate took the life of an 11‑year‑old Nevada boy heading to school. In Henderson, about 16 miles south of Las Vegas, the child was in the back seat of a small hybrid SUV when a 22‑year‑old driver, Tyler Matthew Johns, opened fire on the vehicle after a heated argument with the boy’s stepfather. Johns fired a single shot that struck the teenager, killing him on the spot.
Police say the confrontation began when the two drivers, both impatient after merging onto Interstate 215, curved past each other in the congested lanes of the Las Vegas Beltway. A quick swipe on the shoulder led to raised voices and menacing gestures.
Johns then pulled out a handgun and shot the SUV. The stepfather slammed his fender on Johns’ sedan, causing both cars to stop mid‑lane. The fight escalated until a passing Las Vegas officer intervened, seized the suspect, and handed him over to authorities.
Henderson Police Chief Reggie Rader spoke to reporters about the loss: “We lost a life today that we didn’t have to lose,” he said. “We need everyone to be patient on our roads. We all have a duty to look out for each other.” Johns faces an open murder charge and is being held at the Henderson Detention Center with a $20,000 bond. Chief Rader urged drivers to keep calm, especially as holiday traffic surges: “It’s better to be late in traffic than to risk a funeral or a life in prison.”
