India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar brought together BRICS foreign ministers in New York on Saturday, spotlighting the group’s key role in boosting multilateralism and positive global talks. Speaking to the group, Jaishankar stressed how BRICS stays steady as a voice of reason and positive change when multilateralism faces tough times.

In today’s chaotic world, he said on X (formerly Twitter), BRICS needs to push harder for peacebuilding, open dialogue, smart diplomacy, and sticking to international law. This comes as the world grapples with rising tensions and uncertainties.

Jaishankar also called on BRICS to lead the charge for big reforms in the United Nations, especially the Security Council. He argued that these changes would make global governance fairer and more effective, echoing the bloc’s long-time push for better representation.

On the economic front, he warned about growing protectionism, shifting tariffs, and trade barriers hurting global flows. BRICS, he added, should stand up for the multilateral trading system to keep things fair and open.

Looking ahead, Jaishankar pointed to technology and innovation as the next big drivers for BRICS teamwork. As India takes the chair of BRICS, its focus will zero in on food and energy security, fighting climate change, and sustainable growth. This includes digital shifts, supporting startups, sparking innovation, and building stronger development ties.

Earlier in New York, Jaishankar joined fellow IBSA ministers from India, Brazil, and South Africa for a productive meeting. The group renewed its strong push for major UN Security Council reforms. They also chatted about the IBSA Academic Forum, a joint maritime exercise, their trust fund, and boosting trade among the three nations. “IBSA will keep meeting often,” Jaishankar noted on X, emphasizing continued collaboration.

Jaishankar co-chaired another key session with Colombia’s Foreign Minister Rosa Yolanda Villavicencio—the India-CELAC Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, linking India with the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States. The two sides agreed to ramp up cooperation in areas like agriculture, trade, health, digital tech, disaster response (HADR), and skills training. They also eyed new opportunities in AI, cutting-edge technology, critical minerals, space exploration, and renewable energy.

India and CELAC see eye-to-eye on the urgent need to fix multilateral bodies so they better reflect the Global South’s voice, Jaishankar shared on social media.

During the UN General Assembly sidelines, Jaishankar squeezed in bilateral chats with several counterparts. These included Indonesia’s Foreign Minister Sugiono, Russia’s Sergey Lavrov, Antigua and Barbuda’s Paul Chet Greene, Uruguay’s Mario Lubetkin, and Colombia’s Rosa Yolanda Villavicencio. These talks highlighted India’s active role in shaping international partnerships.
