Indian Badminton Stars Shine and Stumble at China Masters 2025
In exciting action at the China Masters 2025 badminton tournament in Shenzhen, India’s top men’s doubles duo, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, stormed into the semifinals with a dominant win. The pair, fresh off their runners-up finish at the Hong Kong Open last week, crushed China’s Ren Xiang Yu and Xie Haonan 21-14, 21-14 in just 38 minutes during their quarterfinal match at the Shenzhen Arena on Friday.
Rankireddy and Shetty kicked off the first game strong, racing to a 7-0 lead. Even as the Chinese duo clawed back to make it 4-8, the Indians stayed in control, pushing ahead to 11-5 and 17-10 before sealing the game at 21-14. The second game started tighter, with the score tied at 6-6 and leads swapping hands. But Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty pulled away to 10-7, fended off a comeback, and then won five straight points from 15-13 to clinch it 21-14.
This marks their second straight semifinal on the BWF World Tour, and the eighth-seeded pair—currently ranked fourth in the world—had earlier beaten Chinese Taipei’s Chiu Hsiang Cheh and Chi-Lin Wang 21-13, 21-12 in the second round. Up next, they’ll face Malaysia’s Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik in the semis, after the Malaysians edged out Indonesia’s Leo Rolly Carnando and Bagas Maulana. A win here could send Rankireddy and Shetty to their second successive final.
It wasn’t all smooth for India, though. On a mixed day at the USD 1,250,000 event, women’s singles star PV Sindhu bowed out in the quarterfinals. The former world champion lost 14-21, 13-21 to top seed An Se Young of Korea in another 38-minute battle on Court 2 at the Shangbu North Road gymnasium.
