Winter weather alerts issued for over 60 million as Big Apple could see the most snow it’s had in years

Post‑Christmas Storm Targets New York‑area, Brings Heavy Snow, Ice and Travel Warnings

A powerful storm is moving into the Northeast this Friday and will likely keep the region shrouded in snow and ice until early Saturday, threatening major cities, airports and highways. The weather system is expected to deliver the largest snowfall totals the New York City metropolitan area has seen in years.

According to the FOX Forecast Center, the storm will blanket central New Jersey, New York City and parts of southern Connecticut with 3‑5 inches of snow. In the city and the surrounding counties — including northern New Jersey and western Long Island — accumulations could reach 5‑8 inches or more. Snowfall rates during the peak overnight Friday could exceed an inch per hour.

The National Weather Service has already issued Winter Storm Warnings across the region and Winter Weather Advisories from upstate New York into Pennsylvania and New Jersey. In City Hall, Mayor Eric Adams urged residents to prepare for hazardous travel:

“As New Yorkers continue to celebrate the holidays and prepare to celebrate the new year, they should also prepare for hazardous travel conditions Friday into Saturday,” he said in a press release. “New York City agencies have been coordinating and are prepared for the winter weather system, and we continue to monitor conditions closely."

The storm’s impact will also affect major travel hubs. The four largest airports in the area—LaGuardia, Newark, Philadelphia and JFK—are under winter weather alerts, and several interstate corridors, including I‑95, I‑94, I‑90, I‑80, and I‑91, will see heavy snowfall and slick roads.

An ice threat is also in play. High pressure in Canada is expected to generate ice accretion of 0.1‑0.25 inches across central Michigan and parts of Pennsylvania by midday Friday, with isolated patches of over a quarter inch that could cause scattered power outages. The worst ice accumulation is projected between State College, Pennsylvania and Frederick, Maryland, prompting an Ice Storm Warning in western Pennsylvania. FOX Weather meteorologist Ian Oliver cautioned:

“You’ve got to be aware these are dangerous driving conditions as that ice starts going.”

Although the system is fast-moving and most areas should dry out by Saturday morning, residents in the affected zones should stay alert to rapidly changing conditions and plan for possible travel delays.
