A former New Jersey police officer has been permanently banned from any future work in law enforcement after a violent break‑in at her ex‑boyfriend’s home.
Rebecca Sayegh, 32, admitted guilt on November 17 for burglary, criminal mischief and simple assault after storming the ex’s Berkeley residence in April.
As part of the plea agreement, she surrendered her position with Toms River Police and “has forfeited all future public employment in the State of New Jersey.”
She had already been suspended without pay before the court’s ruling.
The prosecution is demanding that she spend 180 days in the Ocean County Jail, maintain no contact with the victims and pay restitution.
The incident took place around 11:20 p.m. on April 25 when Sayegh, wielding her baton, crashed through the front door and confronted the ex and his new partner, who was also present.
During the scuffle the victims tried to restrain her, but she broke free, smashed property throughout the house and dented the hood of one victim’s car.
The new girlfriend fled to the backyard and called 911.
Sayegh resisted arrest and fought with the responding officers.
When she was finally restrained, she threatened to burn the house as she was led down the driveway.
Prosecutors estimate the damage comes to about $2,000 for the home and an additional $500 for the car.
Although she was released from the Ocean County Jail under New Jersey’s bail‑reform system, she remains suspended from the Toms River Police Department.
A sentencing date is set for January 26, 2026.
Her guilty plea comes after she filed a lawsuit last year, alleging that former Toms River Police Chief Mitch Little and other superiors sexually harassed her and denied promotions because of her gender.
