A New York dad, Daniel Patrick Grubert, was taken into custody in Florida after a drunken jet‑ski race ended in a collision that seriously hurt two kids.
Grubert, who lives in Piermont, Rockland County, was racing a rented Yamaha WaveRunner on Sunday in Madeira Beach, just outside St. Petersburg. While speeding, he glanced away from the water and crashed. Before he could stop, the jet‑ski smashed into another boat carried by 45‑year‑old Walter Wodzien and his two little passengers, ages 7 and 8.
The children were hurled into the water and rescued by the Madeira Beach Fire Department. One was rushed to a local hospital with life‑threatening injuries; the other suffered non‑life‑threatening wounds. Wodzien was also thrown from his jet‑ski but escaped hurt.
Police say Grubert was visibly impaired and fared poorly on field sobriety tests. He was arrested and charged with two counts of boating under the influence that caused serious bodily injury, plus one count of reckless operation of a vessel. He was booked at the Pinellas County Jail and released on a combined $100,500 bond on Tuesday morning.
The incident underscores the danger of operating power‑boats while intoxicated and the serious legal consequences that can follow.
