New York City has celebrated the longest stretch of zero murders in almost a decade. According to the NYPD, the capital has gone 12 straight days without a homicide—a record‑breaking run that ended Sunday night when a 38‑year‑old man was shot in the head in the Bronx. Police note that a similar dry spell has not occurred since 2015.
Commissioner Jessica Tisch commended the strategy and execution that have led to these historic lows. “Right strategy. Great execution. That’s how you set record after record,” she said, adding her thanks to the officers who have “sacrificed so much this year to drive down violent crime to record lows.”
Last month’s crime data show a further decline in murders to the lowest level since 2018, with only 16 killings recorded—a 46.6% drop from the previous November. In November, Queens and Staten Island recorded no homicides at all. Additionally, the city hosted a gun buyback event in East New York, Brooklyn on December 6, with police displaying firearms of various sizes and calibers at the press conference.
