NYPD boss Jessica Tisch apologizes to Mamdani after her brother calls him ‘enemy’ of Jewish people
After her brother called him an “enemy” of Jewish people, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch reached out to Mayor‑elect Zohran Mamdani to offer a personal apology, the Democratic Socialist said.
Benjamin Tisch, the Jewish younger brother of the city’s top cop, publicly attacked the incoming mayor during a heated speech at a charity dinner Wednesday night.
Mamdani told reporters at a Thursday event that the commissioner had apologized to his team for the remarks and emphasized that he looks forward to serving every New Yorker, Jewish New Yorkers included. He added that the comments would not affect his working relationship with the NYPD commissioner, stressing that his priority when speaking with her is to ensure public safety while aligning with justice for residents throughout New York’s five boroughs. “She conveyed her apology to the team,” he said. “I appreciated it, and now I’m back to focusing on delivering results.”
Mamdani’s remarks followed Benjamin Tisch— a senior executive at the Loews Corporation— taking a stand against the city’s future after Mamdani’s election win. While presenting an award at the Met Council’s holiday dinner, a nonprofit fighting poverty in the Jewish community, Tisch’s brother directed his criticism at the socialist.
Mamdani has consistently opposed Israel, even threatening to arrest Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he visits the city during the Israel‑Hamas conflict. Tisch’s apology came shortly after she agreed to remain as police commissioner under Mamdani’s leadership.
