Three illegal immigrants and six U.S. citizens were taken into custody on Oct. 22 in the Chicago‑area, marking one of the most violent days of Operation Midway Blitz, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said.
While police and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers carried out routine immigration checks in Cicero and Glendale Heights, a group of agitators chased federal agents, crashed vehicles, and injured officers. DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said the attackers “rammed vehicles, fled scenes, and caused multiple accidents,” putting law enforcement and the public at risk. The three illegal aliens faced arrest for violating U.S. immigration laws; six U.S. citizens were charged with impeding and threatening to kill agents.
McLaughlin added that officers “are facing a surge in assaults as they put their lives on the line to arrest murderers, rapists, and gang members.”
Key incidents from Wednesday
- Alert vehicle chase — Three U.S. citizens (Jacqueline Lopez, Eliana Bahena, Jonathan Uribe) followed Border Patrol vans and even tried to ram a vehicle. All three were detained.
- Latin Kings confrontation — Alexis Correa, a member of the Latin Kings gang, chased agents for several miles, attempted to ram a CBP vehicle, and struck a civilian car. Correa was arrested under 18 U.S. Code § 111, which makes it a federal crime to assault or interfere with federal officials.
- Roadblock by a citizen — Alexander Torres, a U.S. citizen with a criminal record, ignored multiple commands to stop and boxed CBP trucks in an alley. He was taken into custody.
- Illegal‑immigrant arrest — Three Mexican residents were caught refusing to follow CBP orders. The driver, Jose Mauricio Rosas‑Hernandez, reversed into a federal vehicle, scratching a Unit and injuring an officer. The three were handed over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
- Threat to a Border Patrol officer — A U.S. citizen, identified as Isabel Mata, threatened a Border Patrol commander, saying she’d “hit out” on the officer. DHS referred the case to the FBI.
Operation Midway Blitz was launched in late September to target criminal illegal aliens who had terrorized residents in sanctuary Illinois. The operation honors Katie Abraham, a Chicago woman who died in a drunk‑driving hit‑and‑run involving Julio Cucul‑Bol, a Guatemalan‑born illegal immigrant. The raid in Cicero was intended to send a clear message: federal law‑enforcement partners will not be slowed by unlawful acts, and anyone who attacks an officer will face full prosecution, McLaughlin said.
These events underscore an uptick in hostile actions against federal agents during immigration enforcement in the Chicago area. DHS officials will likely review tactics and community outreach to prevent future violent incidents.
