“Other countries were taking advantage of us for years and years, now we are treating them fairly”: Donald Trump on tariffs

US President Donald Trump doubled down on his love for tariffs during a speech in Washington, DC, calling them “the most beautiful word” and his absolute favorite. Speaking on Tuesday, Trump argued that his tariff strategy is making America rich again after years of other countries taking advantage.

“I love tariffs. Most beautiful word… Tariff is my favorite word,” Trump said enthusiastically. “We’re becoming rich as hell.” He pointed out that the US has pulled in trillions of dollars through these policies, adding, “We’ve taken in trillions of dollars. We’re rich again. When we finish this out, there’ll never be any wealth like what we have.”

Trump emphasized fairness in global trade, noting that other nations had exploited the US for decades. “Other countries were taking advantage of us for years and years… Now we’re treating them fairly. But the money coming in is something we’ve never seen.” He even joked about a recent find of $31 billion in revenue, saying it’s “enough to buy a lot of battleships.”

This comes amid Trump’s aggressive push on tariffs to boost American industries. Just days earlier, on September 29, he announced a 100% tariff on all movies produced outside the United States. In a Truth Social post, Trump claimed the US film industry has been “stolen” by foreign competitors, hitting California especially hard under what he called a “weak and incompetent” governor.

“Our movie-making business has been stolen from the United States of America, by other Countries, just like stealing candy from a baby,” Trump wrote. To fix it, he declared, “I will be imposing a 100% Tariff on any and all movies that are made outside of the United States. Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

Before that, on September 26, Trump revealed plans for a 100% tariff on branded and patented pharmaceutical products starting October 1, 2025—unless companies build manufacturing plants in the US. These moves highlight Trump’s ongoing trade policy to protect key sectors like entertainment and pharma from overseas competition, aiming to bring jobs and wealth back home.
