The Pentagon has taken a strong stance against Netflix’s new show “Boots,” calling it a piece of “woke garbage” that pushes an ideological agenda. The drama follows a closeted gay teenager from Louisiana who enlists in the U.S. Marine Corps in the 1990s, when openly gay soldiers were still forbidden.
U.S. military officials, many of whom served in the Trump administration, said the series misrepresents the realities of service life. “Under President Trump and Secretary Pete Hegseth, the U.S. military is returning to its warrior ethos,” Pentagon press secretary Kingsley Wilson said. “Our standards are elite, uniform, and sex‑neutral because the weight of a rucksack or a person doesn’t care if you’re a man, a woman, gay, or straight.”
Wilson added that the military will not “compromise standards to satisfy an ideological agenda,” contrasting this with Netflix’s “woke garbage” for children and audiences. The claim reflects the broader debate over military policy and LGBTQ+ inclusion.
The show, which stars Miles Heizer and Vera Farmiga, premiered on October 9 and has stayed in Netflix’s top 10 viewership charts ever since. The release came just a week after Secretary Hegseth announced stricter military standards, including a push that “dudes with dresses” are not welcome in combat roles and that all personnel must meet male‑level fitness tests for life‑and‑death situations.
Hegseth warned, “Standards must be uniform, gender‑neutral, and high. If not, they’re not standards. They’re just suggestions.” The Pentagon’s criticism of “Boots” echoes concerns from some defense leaders that provocative media could erode discipline and readiness in the armed forces.
As the U.S. military moves forward with debates on inclusion and readiness, the backlash against “Boots” underscores the tension between creative storytelling and institutional values. The issue will likely stay in the conversation as the show continues to attract viewers while drawing fire from defense officials.
