In the middle of a busy holiday season, a post office employee in Oakdale, Long Island, was caught on camera ripping through envelopes that were meant to be mailed out for holiday gifts.
Jovanni Jamison‑Lewis, a 35‑year‑old mailer who had started work in November 2024, was seen opening packages at the Oakdale post office, peeking at greeting cards, and taking away those that contained gift cards.
After police planted a test envelope with a TJ Maxx card, surveillance footage confirmed she opened it and pocketed the card, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office reports. The next day, the same card was used in three separate purchases at a TJ Maxx in Port Jefferson Station, and she was taken into custody on November 24 just as she left work.
Inspectors later found her with more stolen items, including 19 gift cards in her car and another in her home. Prosecutors charged her with grand larceny, possession of stolen property, official misconduct and larceny.
The exact dollar value of the stolen cards has not been disclosed. She was arraigned and released without bail, as the charges are not bail‑eligible under state law.
While the investigation is still underway and additional charges may be brought, the Suffolk County DA, Ray Tierney, said he did not anticipate a separate federal case.
At the time of her arrest, Jamison‑Lewis was found to have left the post office after resigning a week earlier on December 1.
If convicted, she faces up to four years in prison. Tierney emphasized that most public servants are hardworking, but a few bad actors can tarnish the reputation of the whole profession.
