71st National Awards: Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s 12th Fail receives National Award from President Murmu for Best Feature Film

Bollywood’s inspiring drama “12th Fail” just scored a major win at the 71st National Film Awards in New Delhi. On Tuesday, September 23, the film took home the Best Feature Film honor at the ceremony held at Vigyan Bhawan.
Director and producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra beamed with pride as President Droupadi Murmu handed him the award. He rocked a sharp black slim-fit sherwani and blue sunglasses, looking every bit the celebratory star.
The 2023 release stars Vikrant Massey in the lead role, alongside Medha Shankr and Anant V Joshi. It tells the true story of Manoj Kumar Sharma, a young man from extreme poverty who pushes through tough odds to become an IPS officer. His wife, IRS officer Shraddha Joshi, stands by him every step of the way, making their journey even more heartwarming.
This isn’t “12th Fail’s” first big moment. At the 69th Filmfare Awards, Vidhu Vinod Chopra grabbed the Best Director trophy. Vikrant Massey earned Best Actor (Critics), and the film itself won Best Film.
The wins kept coming at the National Awards. Vikrant Massey also picked up the Best Actor award for his powerful performance—sharing the spotlight with Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan, who won for his action-packed hit “Jawan.”
Last month, Vikrant opened up about his joy in a press statement. “I dedicate this award to all the marginalized people in our society—those who get overlooked and fight the socio-economic challenges of our country every day,” he said.
He didn’t hold back on the gratitude, either. “I want to thank the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the NFDC, and all the jury members of the 71st National Film Awards for recognizing my work. A huge shoutout to Vidhu Vinod Chopra ji for this chance. It’s like a 20-year-old dream coming true. I’m so thankful to audiences for loving the film and my role. And what an honor to share my first National Award with a legend like Shah Rukh Khan!”
