A 30‑year‑old woman from Queens, identified as Assa Diawara, was taken into custody after she reportedly left her newborn on a Manhattan subway platform. The incident happened Monday morning at the 34th Street‑Penn Station stop, a key hub for commuters in Midtown.
According to police, Diawara walked into the busy station holding a cloth‑wrapped bundle and stepped onto the 1‑train platform. Later that morning, a driver in West 34th Street picked her up and drove her back to Jamaica, her home neighborhood.
A minute later, officers found the infant — still attached to her umbilical cord — lying on the platform in a blanket bundle. The baby was clear and alert, and officers immediately transported her to Bellevue Hospital in a police cruiser. The little girl is now in stable condition.
Diawara was arrested near her Jamaica home at about 3 a.m. on Wednesday. Police charged her with abandonment of a child and endangering the welfare of a child. Neighbors helped the police identify her after they saw the woman in the NYPD video released this week, which shows her walking the sidewalk with the bundle.
The New York State Abandoned Infant Protection Act allows parents to anonymously surrender babies under 30 days old to safe places such as hospitals or staffed firehouses without facing prosecution. In this case, the infant was left in a public station rather than a protected facility, leading to the arrest.
The baby remains in good health at Bellevue, and the case highlights ongoing concerns about infant safety in public spaces. The police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the abandonment.
