Raging flood destroys Montana bridge in harrowing video amid extreme weather emergency

A powerful storm surge in Libby, Montana turned a once‑quiet creek into a raging torrent that tore a bridge to pieces, swallowing the road beneath it in a must‑see moment captured on camera.
On the afternoon of Dec. 11, residents could only watch as Libby Creek blew through Farm to Market Road, leveling both the bridge and the roadway that crossed it. The video shows the collapsed bridge and the instant a massive concrete slab is swept away by the furious water.
The flood was part of a major atmospheric river that brought heavy rain to the Northwest, impacting Lincoln County and many nearby communities. Across the county, roads were submerged and evacuations were ordered.
The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office reports that at least five bridges in the county were damaged or destroyed, as emergency crews and transportation officials assess the damage and coordinate recovery efforts.
Because of the widespread flooding, the Lincoln County Health Department issued a boil water advisory for Libby, warning of possible bacterial contamination in the drinking water system. “The Libby public water supply has experienced high turbidity due to county‑wide flooding,” a press release said.
A boil‑water advisory means that the water in your community may contain germs that can make you sick, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
On Dec. 11, Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte signed an executive order declaring a flood emergency in Libby after the floods swept across Northwest Montana, with additional rain forecast for the region.
