President Donald Trump has exciting news about his ambitious White House ballroom project. He’s making it even bigger than first thought, boosting its capacity to around 900 people—a whopping 40% jump from the original plan.
In a recent phone chat with NBC News, Trump shared his vision: “We’re making it a little bigger. It will be top of the line, as good as it can get anywhere in the world.” The White House ballroom expansion, first announced in July, was set for 650 guests in a 90,000-square-foot space with a $200 million price tag. Now, it’s scaling up to host more grand events.
Trump isn’t leaving the funding to taxpayers alone. The real estate mogul plans to chip in from his own pocket, alongside donations from supporters he calls “patriots.” Construction kicked off last week, with trucks rolling in right away. Spotting the action on Friday, Trump told reporters, “Right there you see all the trucks. They just started construction of the new ballroom for the White House.”
This idea isn’t new for Trump. The 47th president has dreamed of a White House ballroom for over a decade, even during the Obama years. He argues the current setup—pitching tents on the South Lawn for big gatherings with dignitaries and world leaders—just doesn’t cut it. A proper ballroom would give the executive mansion the elegance it deserves.
The ballroom will blend seamlessly with the White House’s classic architecture, designed by McCrery Architects. It’s set to rise near the East Wing and wrap up by early 2029, right at the close of Trump’s second term. This marks the biggest White House makeover since the 1940s, when Roosevelt expanded the East Wing in 1942 and Truman renovated the interiors, adding a balcony in 1948.
Trump’s White House revamps don’t stop there. In his second term, he’s already added a massive flagpole on the South Lawn, paved areas near the Rose Garden, and decked out the Oval Office with extra gold accents.
During the NBC interview, Trump also touched on heavier topics. Still grieving the recent assassination of his friend Charlie Kirk, he called for national healing while pointing fingers at the “radical left” for fueling violence. “I’d like to see it heal,” he said. “But we’re dealing with a radical left group of lunatics, and they don’t play fair, and they never did.”
