In early November, a man was arrested a few weeks after a violent incident on the Bronx streets. Darin Dominick, 56, turned himself in on Wednesday morning for allegedly attacking a Bronx livery cab driver, Osei “Ozzy” Kusi, 39, in the Castle Hill area near White Plains Road and Randall Avenue. According to police, both vehicles were stopped at a red light around 2:30 a.m. when Dominick, who had been following Kusi, approached the cab and struck the driver’s side window with a baseball bat. Kusi is said to have repeatedly pleaded, “I don’t want to fight you, I don’t want to fight you,” before a sharp object struck his torso again and again. After the attack, Dominick fled in his own car.
The assault has been described as an attempted murder by the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers spokesperson, who said the driver was left “to die.” Kusi was transported to Jacobi Medical Center, where doctors treated him for eight puncture wounds to his chest and a laceration in his mouth. He required multiple stitches and experienced several episodes of losing and regaining consciousness during his care.
In addition to the assault related charges, Dominick faces accusations of assault, menacing and harassment. The court set his bail at $75,000 with a $250,000 bond, though prosecutors sought $300,000 and a $900,000 bond. He is scheduled to return to court on Christmas Day. The local 43rd Precinct praised its quick response and noted that the suspect’s surrender underscores that no one can harm a “hardworking New Yorker” and simply vanish.
Dominick’s record includes previous arrests: an aggravated unlicensed operator charge in 1997, criminal mischief in 1992, and robbery in 1998.
