Rob Reiner feared son Nick’s mental health was ‘deteriorating’ before grisly slashings: family friend
The tragic double murder of Hollywood icon Rob Reiner and his wife Michele has shocked the industry, but for the Reiner family it also marked the grim culmination of a long‑standing nightmare fueled by their son Nick’s mental illness and addiction.
A lifelong family friend, who has known Nick all his life, told The Post that Rob and Michele had repeatedly expressed fear for Nick’s deteriorating mental state while he was reportedly slipping back into drug use over the past months.
The friend, living only a few blocks away from the Reiner estate, added that the parents had “done everything to help this kid,” yet the abuse continued.
Just a day before the lethal clash, Rob and Nick reportedly quarreled at a holiday party hosted by Conan O’Brien. That night, tensions boiled over. An inner source informed The Post that Nick was supposedly off drugs, only to be “not so much off them.”
The same source noted that Nick had been mentally troubled his entire life and that the family had tried every remedy in the book, to no avail.
Rob and Michele had invested heavily in attempting to rehabilitate Nick, sending him to “countless facilities” over the years. As an insider explained, Nick’s addiction to a mix of opiates and heroin had reached a severe depth.
In 2015, the family even collaborated on the semi‑autobiographical film “Being Charlie,” which chronically follows an 18‑year‑old drug addict who is the son of a rising political star.
Nick, now 32, is in custody following the brutal murders that took place at the family’s Brentwood home on Sunday. The news has been updated live by The Post’s reporting.
