“Sanctions and tariffs key to bringing Putin to table for peace”: Republican Senator Lindsey Graham

US Senator Lindsey Graham and Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick are teaming up to push a new bill that could let President Donald Trump slap heavy tariffs on countries buying Russia’s cheap oil and gas amid the Ukraine war. They’re targeting nations like China, India, and Brazil, which they say are keeping Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war machine running.

In a joint statement shared on social media, Graham praised Trump’s strong push for global economic action. “We’re thrilled with President Trump’s call for coordinated steps,” Graham said. He pointed out that China is a big player here, snapping up discounted Russian oil and gas to support Putin. That’s why the US and its NATO allies need to hit back with tough tariffs, he added.

The lawmakers have been crafting this legislation for months. It would give Trump the power to impose significant tariffs on these countries for financing Russia’s aggression. “We’ve worked hard on this bill to back Trump’s strategy,” they said. “We fully support his call for joint action with Europe to pile on maximum economic pressure.”

Graham and Fitzpatrick plan to rally support from both Democrats and Republicans in Congress. They want to attach the bill to the upcoming Continuing Resolution, a key funding measure. “This is a real test of America’s resolve and our allies’ commitment,” they stressed.

This move comes right after Trump’s bold letter to NATO leaders earlier this week. He urged them to stop importing Russian energy and join in major sanctions against Russia. “I’m ready for big sanctions on Russia once all NATO countries agree and start doing the same—and when they all stop buying Russian oil,” Trump wrote. He slammed some allies for weakening the group’s stance by continuing those imports.

Trump didn’t hold back on China either. He suggested tariffs as high as 50 to 100 percent on Chinese goods until the Ukraine war ends. “Only tough trade measures can break China’s hold on Russia,” he argued.

The duo sees this as part of a bigger US plan to squeeze Moscow economically while bolstering Ukraine’s defenses. “Sanctions, tariffs, and selling advanced American weapons to Ukraine—this combo will force Putin to the table for a fair peace,” their statement read.

Graham warned that time is ticking. “The free world must step up, and America has to lead the way,” he said. Trump echoed the urgency in a Fox News interview, saying his patience with Putin is wearing thin. He hinted at a “second phase” of even tougher US sanctions if the conflict drags on.

This tariff push builds on Trump’s earlier hikes on Indian goods over its Russian oil buys, though similar steps haven’t hit China yet. With Russia-Ukraine war tensions high, these moves could reshape global trade and energy ties.
