A flash of alarm hit a Tennessee school bus that was steaming along Highway 49 East on Wednesday afternoon when flames suddenly erupted. The bus, run by the Dickson County School District, was still carrying children at the time the blaze started, sheriff’s officials reported to WSMV.
The driver reacted quickly, pulling the vehicle onto the shoulder of a Ridge Market gas station and opening the doors to let every student out before the interior caught fire.
The pictures that Fox 17 released show the inside of the bus in full blaze, with thick black smoke pouring out of every window. Whoever saw it was relieved to hear that none of the kids were hurt.
One second‑grader from Charlotte Elementary, Asher Winters, later said on WKRN, “I was the first one to get off the bus because I was scared it was going to blow up.” A first‑grader, Penelope Winters, bragged that she “saved everyone because I told the bus driver it was happening.”
The Harpeth Ridge Volunteer Fire Department was the first to arrive, putting out the inferno before it could spread further. The exact cause of the fire is still being investigated.
When the fire was finally doused, the bus was left a charred wreck that officials declared a total loss.
