At least one person was killed and six others were hurt when a gunman opened fire on the campus of Lincoln University in Pennsylvania during the college’s homecoming weekend. The shooting began in the evening after the school’s football team played its double‑header Saturday afternoon.
Police chief Marc Parette confirmed the death and said all victims were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. One suspect was detained at the scene and is being held by the Chester County Sheriff’s Office while investigators search for more details.
The Chester County District Attorney’s Office urged people to stay away from the area, saying law enforcement is still working to determine what happened. Meanwhile, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro posted on social media that he was briefed on the incident and that the state is standing with the university’s president and local officials. He urged residents to follow police directions and to pray for the affected students and staff.
Lincoln University, a historically black college located about 45 miles southwest of Philadelphia and a 25‑mile drive from Wilmington, Delaware, had just finished its biggest weekend of the year. The homecoming celebrations included a Monday‑night banquet, a parade, and the main football match that kicked off at 1 p.m. Saturday.
The university and local police departments did not immediately return calls for comment, but the story is developing. Update as new information comes in.
