In Beverly Hills, a confrontation in a women’s locker room at Gold’s Gym has sparked a heated debate about safety, inclusion, and respectful space in fitness centers.
The dispute began when Tish Hyman, a 42‑year‑old Grammy‑nominated musician and out lesbian, noticed a person who identifies as transgender—Alexis Black, formerly known as Kyle Grant Freeman—standing in the women’s locker room after becoming a trans woman. Hyman asked Black to leave the area, but Black allegedly responded with hostile remarks, calling Hyman a “bitch” and insisting that straight women “wants to see a dick” in the locker room.
Hyman said the incident left her feeling humiliated and unsafe. “I’ve been naked in front of men for 30 years, and now I’m being harassed in the locker room,” she told reporters. She also highlighted Black’s past: a 2022 Ohio conviction for violent domestic abuse, including a beating that broke her former wife’s jaw, and other charges such as drug trafficking and resisting arrest.
After the first snub, Hyman returned to the Gold’s Gym Beverly Center location the next day. While in the sauna, Black entered the room and threatened her again. Gusto staff stepped in, and both parties filed reports. Hyman recorded and posted a video of the exchange on Instagram on October 26, calling the confrontation “the worst—being naked when a guy calls you a bitch.” That clip went viral, generating nationwide conversation about the right to use gender‑neutral locker rooms.
Gold’s Gym is now owned by EōS Fitness, a chain with 150 locations that plans to open or acquire 100 more. When asked for comment, the company did not reply. The gym’s management said law forbids denying anyone equal access based on sex or gender identity, but after the incident police removed both Hyman and Black from the premises and revoked their memberships.
Hyman, who had used the gym to lose 100 pounds and found community among other women, said she was terrified of returning. In social media posts, she announced she would now train at Strong House Fitness, a Hollywood‑based Black‑owned gym that offers private, safe locker rooms.
Black denied any wrongdoing, claiming she was fully clothed and that she would feel victimized if forced into a male or mixed locker room. “You’re not going to put a trans woman with a trans man just because we’re trans,” he said to a reporter. He has yet to respond to further inquiries.
The episode highlights a larger debate about transgender inclusion in public spaces. Advocates argue that separate gender‑neutral facilities can coexist with safe environments for all. Critics maintain that separate options for trans individuals may create a backlash or implicit discrimination against cisgender women.
Tish Hyman has said she “has nothing against trans people” and wants to help create inclusive locker rooms for everyone. The incident, however, has already left many gym-goers wondering whether the current policies are enough to protect safety and respect for all.
