The California gubernatorial hopeful, Eric Swalwell, faced a hard‑tackling moment last weekend at a campaign stop in Orange County when Grammy‑nominated singer Tish Hyman took the floor.
Hyman, who had recently been involved in a dispute at a Gold’s Gym in Los Angeles, asked the candidate if he would allow men—including transgender women with male genitalia—to use women’s locker rooms when he was running for governor.
The video that circulated shows Hyman pressing the question right away: “Are you against men in women’s locker rooms and sports? That’s all you need to answer,” she demanded.
Swalwell answered by shaking his head that he would not want “harassment” in women’s spaces but stopped short of stating outright that he opposed trans women using those rooms.
When Hyman grew increasingly frustrated, she turned to the audience and declared, “Trans [women] are not women and their raping women. So I don’t care if it’s the Democratic side or the Republican side — we need to be on the women’s side, people,” before urging the candidate to do something about the issue: “If you wanna be the governor, you need to do something about it.”
The singer explained that she had been ejected from a Beverly Hills Gold’s Gym after a heated, video‑recorded encounter with Alexis Black (formerly known as Grant Freeman), a woman who is transitioning and a convicted domestic‑violence offender.
Hyman had complained that Black used the women’s locker room and exposed himself while harassing her. In 2022, Black pled guilty to beating his wife, Alexis Freeman, while still living as a man in Ohio, resulting in serious injuries. Black has since denied Hyman’s allegations, insisting that he was fully covered at all times and that nothing improper happened before the confrontation was filmed.
Earlier clips from the same month show Hyman yelling at Black in the locker room, urging him to leave: “Now he knows how to be a man, right? Now he knows how to be a man. Stay outta the women’s locker room! We don’t want it. He needs to have his gym membership revoked for that s–t!” The audio, which has gone viral, underscores her anger over the situation.
