Trump’s former envoy, Steve Witkoff, sat down with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday as the White House pushed a fresh effort to get Moscow to wind down its almost four‑year‑old invasion of Ukraine.

The 68‑year‑old Witkoff was joined in the Kremlin by Trump’s son‑in‑law, Jared Kushner, just two days after the pair had been part of talks between U.S. and Ukrainian delegations in South Florida.

Russian spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters that the talks would continue “as long as needed” and that the U.S. side would only have an interpreter with them.

Before the meeting, the state news agency TASS posted a video of Witkoff, Kushner and Kirill Dmitriev, the head of Russia’s sovereign wealth fund, strolling through central Moscow after grabbing a bite near the historic fortress.

In other news, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was on a European tour Tuesday, stopping in Ireland after a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron. Macron had said on Monday that the two leaders had spoken by phone with Witkoff before he met Putin.

Zelensky also met with the Ukrainian delegation that had just returned from Florida, claiming that the group had “finalized” a 19‑point peace plan that had been drafted during talks in Vienna earlier last month—though he didn’t go into details.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who had joined Sunday’s talks, told reporters that “much work remains” to bring an end to Europe’s bloodiest conflict since World War II.

Witkoff and Kushner arrived in Russia shortly after the Kremlin announced it had captured the logistical hub of Pokrovsk in eastern Ukraine after 21 months of fighting.
Zelensky, speaking to reporters in Paris, noted that battles were still raging in the city that had once housed 60,000 residents.
