A 12‑year‑old girl hit by a bullet to the head during the August 27 mass‑shooting at Minneapolis’s Annunciation Catholic Church is back home after a long fight for survival. Sophia Forchas was treated at Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) and later at Gillette Children’s Hospital before being released Thursday.
Doctors performed emergency surgery that involved removing part of Sophia’s skull to relieve swelling, then placed her in a medically induced coma. After weeks of intensive care, slips of progress appeared: she can walk, swim, and even dribble a basketball.
The Forchas family says that faith played a huge part. “Every step she takes is a living test of the power of prayer,” the parents wrote on their GoFundMe page, which has raised almost a million dollars for Sophia’s recovery. “We are grateful for the remarkable medical staff who brought us to this moment.”
Supporters lined the sidewalk outside HCMC on Thursday, holding signs that read “Stay home. Stay safe,” as Sophia stepped out with her family and medical team in tow. WNBA star Sophie Cunningham also offered prayers for the victims of the “pure evil” shooting, reminding people that its impact stretches far beyond the school.
The tragedy killed two children—Fletcher Merkel and Harper Moyski—and wounded 18 people, 15 of them students. Sophia’s mother, a pediatric critical‑care nurse, found out her daughter was among the injured while at work. Her older brother was inside the school but was spared.
The shooter, a transgender woman named Robin (formerly Robert) Westman, opened fire around 10 a.m. from outside the school, when many children were in the pews. Police say the gunman killed herself after about ten minutes of shooting.
Minneapolis residents and people across the country continue to rally around Sophia and the other survivors. Their story highlights the shock, the resilience, and the faith that have carried them through a devastating day.
