A man from Louisiana has been formally charged in U.S. federal court for helping Hamas carry out the deadly October 7 attack on Israel.
Mahmoud Amin Ya’qub al‑Muhtadi, who lived in Lafayette, Louisiana, was indicted by a federal grand jury for conspiring to support a foreign terrorist organization and for visa fraud. The indictment says he trained with a Hamas military group before illegally entering the U.S. on a fake visa.
Al‑Muhtadi pleaded not guilty. If convicted, he faces a possible life sentence in U.S. prison. He remains in custody without bond, and a trial date has not yet been set.
The case links him directly to the October 2023 attack that killed about 1,200 people in Israel. Israel’s response later racked up tens of thousands of Palestinian deaths in military strikes.
U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, a Republican from Louisiana, said that al‑Muhtadi must face full legal consequences for what he describes as wartime crimes. “Clearly, he is a war criminal,” Cassidy said. “If he is guilty, he should receive the full punishment for his actions.”
FBI agents recovered evidence of al‑Muhtadi’s involvement, including photos of him posing in tactical gear and holding what appears to be a Glock handgun. The FBI’s affidavit highlights his ties to the Hamas attack and the illegal visa used to come to the United States.
The indictment brings new evidence to the case of a U.S. citizen who played a role in a major international conflict. The investigation demonstrates how local authorities can help bring foreign‑terrorism conspirators to justice.
