An 18‑year‑old was taken into custody this Thursday after police allege he set a sleeping homeless man on fire while riding a subway train that was heading through Midtown earlier in the week. The suspect – who police say lives in the East Village – was reportedly seized and is expected to face charges related to the Monday incident.
Police reports say the boy got onto a No. 3 train as it approached 34th Street‑Penn Station just after 3 a.m., and he ignited the 56‑year‑old victim’s clothing, setting him ablaze before he fled the platform. The victim suffered severe burns and was transported to NewYork‑Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center for treatment. Witness accounts indicate the fire was so intense that a fragment of burnt skin was removed from one of the train seats.
Footage released by the police a day after the arrest shows the alleged arsonist leaving the station wearing a black hat, a gray hooded jacket, black pants, black boots, and carrying a backpack.
