Police in Assam have made a big breakthrough in the investigation into the death of popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg. On Wednesday, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) arrested Shyamkanu Mahanta, the chief organizer of the North East India Festival (NEIF), and Siddhartha Sharma, Garg’s manager.
Authorities grabbed Mahanta right at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport as he returned from Singapore, where the festival took place. Meanwhile, police picked up Sharma late Tuesday night from an apartment in Gurugram. Early Wednesday morning, officers flew both men to Guwahati, where the SIT is now questioning them closely.
These arrests come amid intense scrutiny over Garg’s sudden death on September 19 in Singapore. The singer was enjoying a yacht outing when he ran into breathing problems while swimming. Rescuers rushed him to a hospital, but doctors couldn’t save him. Singapore officials listed drowning as the official cause in their initial report.
To get to the truth, the Assam government formed a 10-member SIT led by Special DGP M.P. Gupta. The team has already grilled several people connected to the NEIF event, including members of the Singapore Assam Association and others who traveled from India.
Earlier, the SIT sent notices to Mahanta and Sharma, urging them to come in for questioning. But when they didn’t show up, police issued a lookout notice to track them down. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma even reached out to Interpol for help after repeated summons went unanswered. Sarma promised a full legal push to uncover what happened, especially with so many fans raising concerns about possible foul play in Garg’s tragic end.
Now that these key players are in custody, investigators plan to ramp up their efforts to connect the dots in the Zubeen Garg death probe. Officials haven’t ruled out more arrests as the case unfolds.
