‘We won’t forget or forgive’: 1984 riot survivors attack Congress, urge swift justice

New Delhi, Nov. 1 – On the 41st anniversary of the 1984 anti‑Sikh riots, the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) and families of the victims gathered at the “Sach Di Deewar” (Wall of Truth) in Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib. They lit candles and paid tribute to those who were killed during that brutal period.

Harmeet Singh Kalka, the DSGMC president, said the Sikh community has been demanding justice for more than forty years. “Thousands of Sikhs were burned alive in the riots,” he told reporters. “Every year we remember them and renew our call for a Truth Commission to ensure justice. The genocide must be officially recognized.”

Kalka was critical of the Congress party, arguing that it is too late for apologies. “Congress gave positions and top‑tier security to the very leaders responsible,” he said. “They cannot negotiate on this issue. Their actions are under scrutiny now.”

He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for reopening closed cases, including that of former minister Sajjan Kumar, and for forming a new Special Investigation Team (SIT). “Sajjan Kumar is now in jail, and the government has introduced policies to employ the children of victims,” Kalka added. “But the fight for justice is far from over.”

Survivors shared painful memories. Nirmal Kaur, whose father was burned in Trilokpuri, said she still feels the shock of the riots every November. “Even after 42 years, the wounds haven’t healed,” she said. “We keep filing petitions, but the government has not acted. Why have Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler not been punished?”

Another survivor, Bagi Kaur, said she lost 11 family members. “Congress has never apologized. It claims remorse but has done nothing. The promised support for widow colonies hasn’t materialized. Our children are unemployed,” she said. “We thank the Gurdwara Management Committee for its ongoing support.”

The group expressed cautious optimism about the current government. “With the BJP in power, we hope our children will find jobs and our families can finally become self‑sufficient,” one survivor said.

The gathering at the Wall of Truth served as a powerful reminder of the 1984 riots, the ongoing quest for justice, and the resilience of the Sikh community in Delhi.
