He-Man of Bollywood Dharmendra passes away aged 89

Mumbai, Nov. 24 – The Indian film industry lost one of its icons today. Legendary actor Dharmendra, who was 89, passed away. According to people close to the news agency, he had been discharged from Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai on Nov. 12 after a period of treatment and was reported to be in a stable condition while recuperating at home. When the doctor informed the agency, he said that the star had “fully satisfied” after receiving the necessary care.

“Dharmendra ji has gone from the hospital with full satisfaction. His family has taken him home. Everything has been arranged for him.”

“He is in a stable condition. I request the public not to spread the false news but instead pray for his recovery so that he can celebrate his next birthday with pride.”

Earlier, on Nov. 10 he had been described as critical and on life support, and on Oct. 31 he was under intensive observation by top specialists at the same hospital. He would have celebrated his 90th milestone on Dec. 8.

Professionally, Dharmendra’s filmography exceeds 300 titles, spanning six decades. His most recent appearance was in 2024’s Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, sharing the screen with Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon. The actor is slated to star in an upcoming war drama, Ikkis, directed by Sriram Raghavan, which follows the life of Arun Khetarpal, the youngest Param Vir Chakra recipient. The cast also includes Agastya Nanda, Simar Bhatia, Jaideep Ahlawat, and Sikandar Kher, and the movie is set for a December release.

Dharmendra’s storied career began with his debut in 1960’s Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere and he rose to prominence during the 1960s with hits such as Ayee Milan Ki Bela, Phool Aur Patthar, and Aaye Din Bahar Ke. He went on to dominate Hindi cinema throughout the 1970s and 1980s with blockbusters like Sholay, Seeta Aur Geeta, Yaadon Ki Baaraat, and Chupke Chupke, among many others. In the late 1990s and beyond, he transitioned to character roles in acclaimed films including Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya, Life in a… Metro, Apne, and Yamla Pagla Deewana.

He was honored with the Padma Bhushan in 2012 and holds the record for the most hit films in Hindi cinema. His passing marks the end of an era of unparalleled talent and charisma that defined Indian cinema for half a century.
