A truck driver who caused a fatal crash that killed a newlywed couple in Oregon is an illegal immigrant who received a commercial driver’s license in California under Gov. Gavin Newsom, federal officials say.

The 32‑year‑old Indian national Rajinder Kumar was taken into custody after his semi‑truck jackknifed and struck a vehicle in Bend on Nov. 24, killing William Carter and his wife, Jennifer Lower.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, Kumar was in the United States without legal status, having been released by the Biden administration. DHS confirmed that a detainer has now been filed against him.

Kumar later obtained a commercial driver’s license in California and was granted work authorization in 2023, the feds noted.

He is the latest example of an illegal migrant apprehended following a deadly crash after being allowed into the country by the Biden administration, according to immigration officials.

DHS assistant secretary Tricia McLaughlin explained, “Rajinder Kumar, a criminal illegal alien from India, was released into our country under the Biden administration and issued a commercial driver’s license by Gavin Newsom’s Department of Motor Vehicles.”

She questioned, “How many more senseless tragedies must take place before sanctuary politicians stop allowing illegal aliens to dangerously operate semi‑trucks on America’s roads?”

DHS’s Under Secretary Noem added, “Our prayers are with William and Jennifer’s families. ICE will continue its efforts to get illegal alien truck drivers off America’s highways.”

The remarks followed the arrest of Harjinder Singh, another illegal migrant who was taken in August over a Florida crash that claimed three lives.

That same month, Partap Singh—an illegal immigrant from India—was accused of causing a multi‑car pileup in California that left a five‑year‑old with lifelong injuries.

In October, Jashanpreet Singh, also an illegal migrant, was detained over an alleged drunken crash that killed three people in California.
