In September, a 41‑year‑old illegal immigrant named Borko Stankovic was arrested in Portage County, Indiana after a truck crash that killed a 54‑year‑old Subaru driver. Police say Stankovic tried a hard left turn that sent his semi‑truck into oncoming traffic, causing a jack‑knifed collision with a Ram Sprinter.
The onslaught turned the Sprinter into a roadside sign and forced the Subaru into a fatal impact. Witnesses confirm the crash happened on U.S. Highway 20 near Douglas Drive.
Stankovic had no valid commercial driver’s license. Authorities found he drove the truck under a suspended Illinois license belonging to a family member. The incident also ties to a larger story about how the COVID‑19 Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) let a small business owner—who was also an illegal immigrant—tap more than $35,000 in taxpayer money.
ProPublica records show two of Stankovic’s companies, Eclipse Trucking Inc. and ESD Team Inc., received a combined $36,082 in PPP loans. Both firms have one employee listed, and the loans have since been forgiven.
The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Chicago office placed a detainer on Stankovic as he was being taken to the Porter County Jail. He faces felony charges of reckless homicide and criminal recklessness that caused death.
ICE’s Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said Stankovic has been in the United States illegally since February 2011, when his non‑immigrant visa expired. Earlier in New York, Stankovic was arrested for resisting arrest and obstruction.
“Americans should be concerned that illegal aliens can access federal benefits,” said Rosemary Jenks, policy director for the Immigration Accountability Project. “Under the Biden administration there were lax checks that let people take PPP loans. Those dollars should stay with American citizens.”
Stankovic’s attorney has not spoken to reporters. While the crime has sparked outrage over dangerous truck drivers in the U.S., it also highlights the loopholes that let foreign nationals benefit from U.S. welfare programs. The incident underscores the need for tighter enforcement of both transportation safety and immigration laws.
