The Trump administration rolled out tough new rules Friday targeting journalists covering the Pentagon, aiming to tighten control over what reporters can access during the president’s second term. According to reports from The Washington Post and New York Post, the policy demands that journalists sign a pledge promising not to collect any information—even unclassified details—without official approval. Break the rules, and you’ll lose your Pentagon press credentials.
This move builds on earlier changes at the Defense Department. Back on February 1, officials launched a rotational program for workspaces, swapping out spots traditionally held by major news outlets like CNN for pro-Trump and right-wing media groups that hadn’t gotten Pentagon office space before. The Friday announcement drew sharp backlash from journalists, who called it a political ploy to punish outlets critical of Trump while rewarding friendly voices.
Don’t worry, though—these shifts only hit workspaces, not overall access. Reporters from affected newsrooms can still attend press briefings and talk to military leaders, as CNN noted. Still, losing desks in the building puts traditional media at a disadvantage, especially since on-site offices often help scoop quick stories.
Newsroom reps met with Pentagon brass this week to voice worries about the rotation program. It’s standard for big outlets to get workspaces in key government spots, like the White House or Capitol Hill. But the Trump team has pushed hard to open doors for nontraditional media, especially those giving positive coverage to the president, per The New York Times.
At the heart of it all is the Correspondents Corridor, a dedicated office area lent out by the defense secretary. This space honors the Pentagon’s long-standing commitment to keeping the public in the loop on U.S. military matters. As tensions rise over media access and Trump Pentagon restrictions, these changes spotlight the ongoing battle between the administration and the press.
