Trump after Gaza ceasefire deal

Washington — In a morning cabinet session at the White House, former President Donald Trump announced that the first phase of a Gaza ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas is set to begin very soon. He said the agreement would officially start within weeks and that the U.S. had played a key role in persuading the parties to agree.

The meeting was also a moment for Trump to parade his own peace‑building resume. Speaking to officials, he claimed that he has ended “seven wars” during his years in office, counting the new Gaza truce as number eight. Trump explained that the conflicts he pointed to included clashes in Cambodia‑Thailand, Serbia‑Kosovo, the Red Sea region, Ethiopia‑Eritrea, and the long‑running Israel‑Palestine situation, among others. He argued that many of these were dead‑locked for decades before his administration stepped in.

Trump’s remarks echoed a speech he delivered earlier this month at the United Nations General Assembly, where he highlighted the same “seven wars” and added that he had helped broker a truce between India and Pakistan. He even floated the idea that he deserves a Nobel Peace Prize for these successes.

When asked about the ongoing Russia‑Ukraine war, Trump said he had expected it to be easier to resolve because of his personal ties to President Vladimir Putin. He reminded reporters that he had met Putin in Alaska and urged him to hold talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump insisted that the conflict would not have started if he had been president, and he blamed Moscow for the high casualty rate.

In a note of policy, Trump linked high energy prices to the Ukraine war, suggesting that easing oil and gas prices could help bring an end to hostilities. He called on the U.S. to keep applying pressure on Russia, noting that the Kremlin had not lived up to expectations.

The White House briefing covered a wide range of issues, but Trump’s focus on peace agreements and his boast about ending global conflicts drew the most attention. Whether his claims hold up under scrutiny remains to be seen, but the former president has again positioned himself as a global peacemaker.
