US President Donald Trump has slapped a new 100% tariff on all movies made outside the United States. He made the bold move in a fiery post on Truth Social on Monday, blasting foreign countries for “stealing” America’s film industry.
“Our movie-making business has been stolen from the United States of America, by other Countries, just like stealing candy from a baby,” Trump wrote. He pointed fingers at California and its governor, calling the state “particularly hard hit.” To fight back, Trump declared: “I will be imposing a 100% Tariff on any and all movies that are made outside of the United States.” He wrapped it up with his signature line: “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
This isn’t Trump’s first big tariff swing. Just days earlier on September 26, he targeted the pharmaceutical world with a similar 100% tariff on branded and patented drugs starting October 1, 2025—unless companies build factories in the US. “Starting October 1st, 2025, we will be imposing a 100% Tariff on any branded or patented Pharmaceutical Product, unless a Company IS BUILDING their Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Plant in America,” he posted. Companies already breaking ground on US plants get a pass.
The pharma tariffs hit hard at India, the world’s “Pharmacy of the World.” Indian companies supply over 50% of global vaccines, 40% of US generic drugs, and 25% of UK medicines. Last year, India’s drug exports soared to a record $30 billion, up 31% in March alone. In August 2025, exports jumped 6.94% to $2.51 billion. The US alone took in $8.7 billion worth in FY24, making it a top market for giants like Dr. Reddy’s, Aurobindo Pharma, Sun Pharma, and others—who get 30-50% of their revenue from America.
India’s pharma powerhouse status ranks it third globally by volume and 14th by value. Experts predict it’ll hit $130 billion by 2030 and $450 billion by 2047. Government boosts like the $2 billion PLI scheme fund 55 projects for cancer and diabetes drugs, while the $60 million SPI scheme helps smaller firms upgrade labs and R&D. These moves keep Indian pharma affordable and competitive worldwide.
Trump’s tariff spree doesn’t stop there. He’s hitting imported household goods too, like a 50% tariff on kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities, plus 30% on upholstered furniture, both kicking in October 1, 2025. He also flagged heavy duties on trucks, adding to rising costs for everyday items. These steps aim to bring manufacturing home, but they could shake up global trade in films, drugs, and home goods.
