US President Donald Trump has urged NATO and European countries to step up their game against Russia, slamming Europe for still buying oil from Moscow despite the ongoing tensions. In a candid chat with reporters, Trump didn’t hold back, pointing out that Europe needs to match the US’s tough stance on sanctions.
“They’re not doing the job,” Trump said. “NATO has to get together. Europe has to get together. Europe is my friend, but Europe is buying oil from Russia. I don’t want them to buy oil. And the sanctions they’re putting on are not tough enough. I’m willing to do sanctions, but they’re going to have to toughen up their sanctions to match what I’m doing.”
He made it clear he’s ready to act, but Europe must follow suit. “Right now, they’re talking and they’re not doing. Look, they’re buying oil from Russia. We’re not buying oil from Russia. They’re buying a lot of oil from Russia. That’s not the deal,” Trump added. He also called out Europe for importing liquefied natural gas from Russia, saying, “Whether it’s natural gas or cigarettes, I don’t care. They’re not supposed to be buying from Russia.”
On the idea of a summit to ease talks between Russia and Ukraine, Trump was straightforward. “Whether you call it a summit or just a get-together, doesn’t matter. But I’ll probably have to get them to hate each other so much they almost can’t talk. They’re incapable of talking to each other right now.”
This comes after Trump sent a letter to NATO nations, where he wrote, “I am ready to do major sanctions on Russia when all NATO nations have agreed and started to do the same thing, and when all NATO nations STOP BUYING OIL FROM RUSSIA.” He pushed for even bigger moves, like slapping 50% to 100% tariffs on China as a group effort. “I believe that this, plus NATO placing 50% to 100% tariffs on China—to be fully withdrawn after the war with Russia and Ukraine ends—will help end this deadly but ridiculous war,” Trump stated. He argued that China has a tight grip on Russia, and these tariffs could break it.
Trump also took a swipe at the previous US administration, insisting, “This is not Trump’s war—it would never have started if I were president. It’s Biden and Zelenskyy’s war. I’m only here to help stop it and save thousands of Russian and Ukrainian lives (7,118 lives lost last week alone. Crazy!).” With the Russia-Ukraine conflict dragging on, Trump’s push for stronger NATO sanctions and tariffs on China is sparking fresh debates on global alliances and energy dependence.
