Washington, D.C. – On Saturday, October 12, President Donald Trump announced that he was telling Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth to use all available money to make sure American troops get paid on October 15, even though the federal government is shut down.
The president said he was exercising his power as Commander‑in‑Chief to direct the secretary. Trump blasted Senator Chuck Schumer and other Democrats, calling the shutdown a “radical left” move that is putting the nation’s security on the line.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the Democrats had “held the military hostage” and that he would not let them keep soldiers from getting their pay. He added that the Department of Defence had identified the required funds and would use them to pay the 1.3 million Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Space Force members who have not yet received wage checks.
A White House statement from press secretary Karoline Leavitt on October 3 confirmed that military families were already rushing into food pantries because of the financial pinch caused by the shutdown. Leavitt reported a 34 % surge in families seeking food assistance and noted that the line of people outside the Armed Services YMCA food pantry near Fort Hood, Texas, was longer than ever before.
The shutdown began on October 1 after Congress failed to pass a continuing resolution. By Thursday, the White House warned that thousands of federal workers could see their jobs end if the pause continues. The Office of Management and Budget and other officials were reportedly weighing which departments might be impacted.
Trump’s message was clear: the president wants the government to open again, pay the troops on time, and stop what he calls a dangerous “Democratic” shutdown that threatens the country’s security. The call to Biden for a quick resolution comes amid mounting pressure from both sides of the aisle to end the 34‑day shutdown.
