On Tuesday, President Donald Trump met former hostage Edan Alexander and the family of Omer Neutra in the Oval Office. Alexander had been held by Hamas for 584 days. Neutra was an Israeli Defense Forces soldier killed by Hamas a few days after the October 7 attacks.
The White House said Trump is “committed to bringing every hostage home.” A post on the President’s X account confirmed the visit, noting it was the second anniversary of the attacks and stressing Trump’s pledge to secure the release of all captives.
Meanwhile, tomorrow’s first round of indirect talks between Israel and Hamas in Sharm el‑Sheikh, Egypt, ended on a hopeful note. Health officials and negotiators mapped out a roadmap for future meetings, aimed at a prisoner exchange, a ceasefire, and a humanitarian corridor into Gaza. The Hamas delegation warned that continued Israeli airstrikes are a barrier to progress.
Hamas leaders Khalil al‑Hayya and Zaher Jabarin, both survivors of a recent Israeli hit in Doha, joined the talks. They urged mediators to speed up the release of hostages as part of a broader deal.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump is pushing for an early swap of Israeli captives and Palestinian prisoners. “The technical teams are discussing the details right now to create the right environment for a release,” she added. “We’re reviewing the list of both Israeli hostages and political prisoners slated for release.”
The talks, part of President Trump’s 20‑point plan to end the Gaza crisis, are expected to continue. Analysts see the discussions in Sharm el‑Sheikh as a key step toward a broader settlement that could bring fresh humanitarian aid into the besieged Gaza Strip.
