US President Donald Trump linked more US oil drilling to ending the Russia-Ukraine war during a speech at the American Cornerstone Institute Founders Dinner in Mount Vernon on September 21. He argued that ramping up drilling would lower energy prices and force a quick resolution to the conflict.
“That oil drilling will automatically stop the war with Russia and Ukraine,” Trump said. “You get the prices down a little bit more, that has to stop it. I’m very disappointed in President Putin. Anywhere between 5,000 to 7,000 people are dying every week.”
Trump sharpened his criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying the leader let him down by not halting the invasion during a recent state visit to Britain. Speaking at a press conference alongside UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump added, “He’s killing many people and he’s losing more people than he’s killing. Frankly, Russian soldiers are dying at a higher rate than Ukrainian soldiers.”
Trump admitted he once thought the Russia-Ukraine war would be the easiest global conflict to solve, but it turned out tougher than expected. He insisted the full-scale invasion never would have happened if he had stayed in the White House. “This was something that would have never happened had I been president,” Trump declared. “If I were president, it would have never happened. And it didn’t happen for four years. Most people agree it didn’t happen, nor was it close to happening.”
He recalled his own diplomatic pushes, including a summit with Putin—though he mentioned Alaska, past records point to meetings like Helsinki in 2018—where he urged the Russian leader to negotiate directly with Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Despite those efforts, no peace deal emerged, and the conflict dragged on.
The Russia-Ukraine war traces back to 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea and backed separatist rebels in Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region. Tensions boiled over into a full-scale invasion in February 2022, with Putin citing goals to demilitarize and “denazify” Ukraine. Since then, Ukraine has fought back with bold counteroffensives in the south and northeast, retaking chunks of land. Russia seized key cities like Mariupol and pushed forward in Donetsk and Luhansk. Just last month, in August 2024, Ukraine staged a surprise incursion into Russia’s Kursk region, grabbing territory and taking prisoners. The fighting continues to claim lives on both sides, with no end in sight.
