‘Trump shares deep friendship with PM Modi’: US Prez’s envoy pick Sergio Gor

Sergio Gor, the head of the US Presidential Personnel Office and a top pick for US Ambassador to India, recently shared some warm insights about the bond between President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Speaking to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Gor highlighted how this “deep friendship” could play a big role in strengthening US-India ties.

Gor was responding to questions on using the growing US-India partnership to tackle global issues like the Ukraine conflict. “Our President has a deep friendship with Prime Minister Modi, and that’s something unique,” he said. He pointed out that even amid trade tensions, Trump has always praised Modi’s strong leadership. “They have an incredible relationship. I’ve been in the same room with them,” Gor added, noting that talks on tariffs are moving forward steadily.

On the economic front, Gor stressed that stopping India’s purchases of Russian oil is a key priority for the Trump administration. This comes as Washington and New Delhi ramp up their strategic engagement, with energy, trade, and security taking center stage in US-India relations.

Gor told senators that the two countries are “not that far apart right now” on a major trade deal. “Discussions have moved to the nitty-gritty stage,” he explained, emphasizing India’s role as a vital strategic partner for the United States. If confirmed, Gor promised to boost ties in areas like security, trade, shared values, climate action, defense, and technology. “India is not simply a regional ally but a strategic partner,” he said, focusing on rebuilding trust and easing trade frictions.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed this during Gor’s nomination hearing, calling India “one of the top relationships America has today in terms of the future of the world.”

Currently leading the White House Presidential Personnel Office, Gor is a close Trump aide with solid conservative roots. Trump announced his nomination as Ambassador to India on August 22, along with a new role as Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs. Both Washington and New Delhi are watching this potential appointment closely, as it could shape the future of US-India ties.
