Paul Ingrassia, President Trump’s pick to run the Office of Special Counsel, sparked a backlash after a series of text messages from last year were released. The texts, reported by Politico, claim that Ingrassia bragged about having a “Nazi streak” and criticized the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, calling it a “holiday” for “hell.”
The messages have drawn sharp criticism from lawmakers and the public, raising questions about his suitability for the whistle‑blower agency.
The texts were sent in May 2024 to a group of Republican friends. Ingrassia allegedly wrote, “I do have a Nazi streak in me from time to time, I will admit it.” He also said the MLK holiday should be “ended and tossed into the seventh circle of hell,” while blaming “moulignon holidays” from Kwanzaa to Juneteenth.
Supporters say the emails were satirical jokes aimed at liberals who label MAGA supporters as Nazis. A lawyer, Edward Paltzik, argues the messages may have been manipulated or taken out of context.
Despite the defense, the release of the texts triggered calls for Ingrassia’s nomination to be withdrawn. Senate Majority Leader John Thune said the Senate “won’t confirm” the nominee.
Three other Republicans, including Senators Rick Scott, Ron Johnson and James Lankford, announced they would oppose confirmation. Scott said, “I’m not supporting him. I can’t imagine how anybody can be antisemitic in this country. It’s wrong.”
Ingrassia’s appointment was scheduled for a Senate hearing on Thursday. The controversy over his comments highlights wider concerns about the line between political rhetoric and real discrimination. The Office of Special Counsel, responsible for investigating workplace misconduct, could face delays if the nomination stalls.
With the fight over his confirmation in full swing, the Senate will soon decide whether Ingrassia can lead the agency. He faces a tough test as lawmakers weigh his past remarks against his record and the need for robust whistle‑blower protections.
