UN Security Council Slams Israeli Strike on Qatar, Urges De-Escalation in Gaza Conflict
The United Nations Security Council has strongly condemned Israel’s recent attack on Qatar’s capital, Doha. All 15 members, including the US—Israel’s closest ally—agreed on the statement calling for calm amid rising tensions. This comes as the Gaza war heats up, forcing over 200,000 people to flee their homes.
The attack targeted Hamas leaders during a meeting in Doha to discuss a potential peace deal proposed by US President Donald Trump. Five Hamas members died, along with a Qatari security officer. Hamas claims its top leaders survived the hit. The UN’s emergency session on Thursday will dive deeper into these strikes and the worsening situation in Gaza City.
In the statement, drafted by France and the UK, the council stressed the need to release hostages held by Hamas, including those sadly killed. They also called for an end to the war and suffering in Gaza, where over 40 captives remain—only about 20 are thought to be alive. The group showed full support for Qatar’s sovereignty and praised its role as a key mediator in Israel-Hamas peace talks.
Even the US, which usually backs Israel at the UN, criticized the move sharply. Acting US Ambassador Dorothy Shea said bombing inside Qatar—a brave partner helping broker peace—doesn’t help Israel or America’s goals. She added that no one should use this to doubt Israel’s efforts to free its hostages. But she made it clear: the US won’t defend this attack on a sovereign nation.
Diplomatic sources told Al Jazeera that the US pushed back against tougher wording against Israel in the statement, but it still packs a punch. Reporter Gabriel Elizondo noted from New York that this crosses a line for Washington, even as it continues to shield Israel overall.
The White House confirmed President Trump wasn’t informed beforehand. Once he learned about the strike, he quickly told his envoy, Steve Witkoff, to alert Qatar—though the attack was already underway.
Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani joined the three-hour UN session in New York. He vowed to keep up humanitarian and diplomatic work but warned against more security breaches. Calling out Israeli leaders for arrogance, he said their actions threaten regional stability.
UN Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo called Qatar a vital peace partner and slammed Israel’s recklessness. She pointed to the devastating Gaza war, which has killed tens of thousands and left the area in ruins. DiCarlo also warned of risky escalations involving Iran, Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen.
Algeria’s UN ambassador, Amar Bendjama, didn’t hold back. He accused Israel of ignoring laws, borders, and sovereignty, calling it "recklessness" and "madness" from an extremist government pushing the world toward disaster.
Israel’s UN envoy, Danny Danon, defended the strike. He labeled the targeted Hamas figures as terrorists hiding in luxury in Doha, not as diplomats or leaders.
The session showed huge backing for Qatar and widespread anger at Israel. Countries pushed for accountability over Israel’s actions in the ongoing Gaza conflict. As peace efforts hang in the balance, the world watches closely for any signs of de-escalation.
