A UPS cargo aircraft burst into flames and exploded on take‑off at Louisville’s Muhammad Ali International Airport, killing at least nine people and sending a fiery “ball of fire” across a parking lot full of trucks. The dramatic event was captured on a truck driver’s dashcam, giving viewers a front‑row seat to the disaster.
The crash happened on Tuesday afternoon when UPS Flight 2976 tried to lift off from the airport’s runway. The plane, carrying about 50,000 gallons of fuel and three crew members, sagged on the runway, flipped, and plummeted into a nearby petroleum recycling plant. Its left engine erupted in a massive blaze before the aircraft hit the ground with a loud roar. The fire spread quickly, engulfing several cargo trucks in the parking lot and forcing firefighters to patch it with more than 100 personnel.
The dashcam footage shows the driver, parked a few feet from the runway, watching in horror as a huge fireball rolled toward him. His face went pale; he shouted “Ohhh s‑t!” and “Oh my f‑king god!” before hurrying out of the cab. The video also captures the moment the UPS plane exploded and the flames devoured the surrounding trucks.
Officials say the death toll may rise as investigators search for any missing persons. At least 16 families have reported relatives who were near the site but have not yet been located.
Fire Chief Brian O’Neill called the incident a “terrible tragedy” during a press briefing. “Those were real people who were affected,” he said. “Let’s make a moment to think about them and their families.”
As the investigation continues, the footage from the dashcam will remain a stark reminder of the risks inside the aviation industry and the importance of emergency preparedness at airports.
